An eight-year-old boy is critical after a car hit him while he was crossing the road in the Millat Nagar area of Andheri (West) on Sunday afternoon.

According to police, the victim, Mitu Shaikh, resides in the Millat Nagar slums along with his parents, who both work as labourers in an under-construction building in the Oshiwara area.

The family had arrived in the city from Delhi only a week ago.

“At 4pm on Sunday, Shaikh was sent to buy something from a nearby shop. Just as he was crossing the street, a speeding Hyundai car hit the divider before hitting him. Due to the impact of the blow, Shaikh was dragged a few meters until the Hyundai car hit another car,” said inspector UD Kadlag of the Oshiwara police.

“Passers-by and the locals rushed Mitu to Cooper Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU. Initially critical, his condition is now stable,” added Kadlag.

The police was informed of the incident and the Hyundai car driver detained.

“While we plan to arrest the driver under the charge of causing hurt due to rash and negligent driving, there are been no indications of drunken driving so far,” said another officer.
