At least eight IT firms, including three from Pune, have approached the district administration here for suitable land to launch their units in Kolhapur.

Maharashtra minister of state for home Satej Patil, Kolhapur district collector Laxmikant Deshmukh and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation’s regional officer Ravindra Khebudkar conducted a meeting with the representatives of the firms early this week.

Patil said the eight companies have sought plots in the Kagal Five Star MIDC Industrial Estate, which will be allotted soon. About Rs20 crore investment is expected from these companies and they are expected to generate 200 jobs in the district.

The firms include Pune-based Bizgain Technologies Private Limited, Texnovate Solutions Private Limited and Suma Soft Private Limited, Mumbai’s SS Software, Kolhapur’s Rutuja Infotech, Aditi Infotech, Mascot Software Technologies Private Limited and Tanishka Infotech.

While SS Software plans to invest Rs10.40 crore, Bizgain Technologies Private Limited and Texnovate Solutions Limited’s investment will put in Rs1 crore and Rs1.57 crore respectively.

Khebudkar said 50 acres has been identified in the Kagal MIDC Industrial Estate for the IT sector. “The land will be allotted immediately. We are expecting these companies to become operational by the end of this year,” he said.

Since 2006, government bodies and different industry associations have been trying to attract IT industries to Kolhapur.

In 2006, the then commissioner of Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, Kunal Kumar, had organised the Kolhapur IT Advantage conference in Kolhapur.

This event was repeated last year too by Kolhapur district collector Laxmikant Deshmukh at Pune and Bangalore.

The comparatively low cost of land, availability of cheap manpower, low job attrition, proximity to Pune, availability of air services and improving infrastructure have been cited as some of the merits of Kolhapur.
