Eight commuters were injured after a suburban train collided against the dead-end of platform number 4 at the heritage Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) on Sunday morning.

Officials said that as soon as the Dombivli-CST local reached the station at 9:31am, the train rammed into the buffers, leading to panic.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) at CST said passengers were hurled forward by the impact of the collision, causing minor injuries.

The injured include five men and three women. The names of the injured women passengers are Mita Arbind Sangvi, 54, Champa Pradeep Sikari, 60, and Vyatsala Sukhdev Shirsat, 60. The names of the injured men passengers are Sikandar Abdul Kapdi, 38, Kiran J Pandya, 54, Arbind Sangivi, 57, Rajkishore Hariprasad Vishwakarma, 51, and Keshav Balaram Gadhmale, 36.

The passengers sustained minor injuries and were administered first aid at St George Hospital. They were discharged soon after.

It was a semi-fast train and had been diverted onto the slow track due to the Sunday mega block. “We have noted the incident in the station dairy. No complaint has been registered,” a GRP official at CST said.

The motorman, AB Purohit, who escaped without any injuries, will be questioned for the reason behind the incident, officials said.
Central Railway as usual has formed a “high-level committee” to inquire into the incident.

Railway officials said it would be too early to say what caused the train to crash but said that an investigation was underway.

“The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained. A committee comprising senior railway officials will give a report after conducting investigations,” a divisional official said.
