Education dept launches drive to enroll 74 lakh girls in schools

The widening gender gap in certain communities and areas, lack of primary facilities for girl students have moved the school education department to introduce a special drive for the enrollment of the 74lakh girls, who are out of schools. The state has 12 districts with 42 blocks with the worst percentage of the gender gap.

Of the 1.61 crore enrollment in schools, the number of girls is 74.88 lakh and the gap keeps widening with respect to higher education. In a drive that is being undertaken by the department, 74 lakh girls will be enrolled in schools.

The school education minister Rajendra Darda announced on Thursday that the letters will be hand delivered to the girls. “Apart from the letters, elected representatives including MP s, head of local bodies will participate and appeal to enroll at least 5 girl students each,” he said. “We will try to overcome the factor responsible for the poor enrollment of girls. Apart from providing them the basic facilities like toilets, we are also clubbing the schools that have very low enrollments.”

The gender gap is widening by the year. The gap at the primary level rose to 5.82% in 2009-10 from 5.65% last year.
