The Borivli magistrate court recently ordered an enquiry on the accusation of a bribe of Rs3 lakh being demanded from Dr Raju Verma, allegedly by police sub-inspector (PSI) of the Economic Offense Wing (EOW), Arjun Gaikwad, in January 2010.

According to Verma’s private application, on January 1, 2010, he came to know that his acquaintances Rajesh Verma and Motilal Verma had been arrested by the EOW for a case of cheating.

The accused PSI came to Verma’s house to serve a notice under section 160 of the CrPC, and Verma was called to record his statement. He clarified that he knew the two only because of a real estate transaction between them.

“The accused told me to pay Rs3 lakh to him, or else he would implicate me by showing that I am also engaged with Rajesh Verma in the case. I filed an anticipatory bail application in the sessions court, which was granted in March because of lack of substantive evidence against me,” read Verma’s application.
PSI Arjun Gaikwad told DNA that the allegations were baseless.

“We have done everything lawfully, and his bank account has also been seized as per the rules. It is a serious case of cheating which is under investigation. He may have been paid to build a case against me. They used political pressure earlier, but now that that has failed, this may be their new tactic. I have nothing to fear, and the truth shall surface in the enquiry,” said Gaikwad.
Raju’s lawyer Avinash Dubey said, “My client was also pressurised to withdraw his complaint.” His application reads,

“On July 4, 2010, two policemen came to my shop, and said, “Police ke bawal mein mat ja.Yeh sab toh chalta rehta hai, paisa hi toh manga hai, de de, khatam kar nahin toh khote case mein phasane mein time nahin lagega.” (Just give the money. It is very easy to get someone arrested for a false case) The report of the enquiry has to be submitted by Goregaon police station by February 16, 2011.
