Two youths strangulated their 24-year-old sister-in-law Poornima Dohare with her dupatta at Kurla railway staff quarters in the wee hours of Tuesday for Rs15,000. Her 28-year-old husband, Manjesh Kumar, who was a Class IV employee in the Central Railway, had died of a prolonged illness at Kalyan Railway Hospital on February 4.
She got Rs15,000 from the railway authorities on Monday to perform his last rites.
“Pradeep Kumar Dohare, 24, and his younger brother Chandrashekhar Dohare, 19, have been booked for murder,” said senior police inspector Dhananjay Bagayatkar of Nehru Nagar police station. The duo would be produced before the court on Wednesday, he added.
Narrating in the incident, the victim’s brother Manish Pratap Singh, 17, said: “We had been staying in a flat on the second floor of building No. 106 of Kurla railway staff quarters since January 21 to take care of our brother-in-law. The two younger brothers of my brother-in-law were also staying in the same flat for the past few days.”
On Monday, C David Jaykumar, a welfare officer of the Central Railway, visited their flat to condole the death of Manjesh Kumar, said Manish, adding that the officer later gave Rs15,000 to his sister to perform the last rites of her husband after making her fill up some forms.
At around 11 pm, Poornima went to sleep in the bedroom while Manish, his elder brother Kushwant and the now-arrested duo slept in the drawing room. Around 2 pm, Manish and Kushwant were shaken out of their slumber by some strange sound. Soon they realized that something was amiss and went into the bedroom to check on their sister. Inside, a ghastly sight was awaiting them: Poornima was lying in the bed with her dupatta fastened around her neck. The two brothers tried to wake her up but she didn’t.
Then they rushed to their neighbours for help. But by then it was too late. They immediately informed the Nehru Nagar police who came to the flat and took the body to the Rajawadi Hospital for post mortem. The post mortem report revealed that she was died of strangulation.
On the basis of Kushwant’s suspicion that Pradeep and Chandrashekhar were the culprits, the police arrested the duo.
Kushwant suspected that the duo had gone into the bedroom to steal the cash but before they could lay their hands on it, Poornima woke up. And to stop her from screaming, they strangulated her, then tiptoed into the drawing room and feigned to be asleep, he told the police.
