After offering prayers at the IC Colony Church for Maundy Thursday, two women were returning to their Borivli home when a speeding Maruti Esteem hit them on Holy Cross Road in Borivli (West) at 12.15am.

The police caught the driver and booked him for drink driving.
Carol Gibson, 45, and Celiene D’souza, 41, are critical at Nanavati Hospital.

“Both victims have suffered head injuries and leg fractures. Their condition is critical,” said senior police inspector Suresh Kilje of the MHB police station.

On Thursday night, the two women left their homes at Fairy Apartments in IC Colony to visit the nearby church.

When they were returning home, a speeding car hit them near ICICI Bank on Holy Cross Road and drove away. The impact was such that both women were thrown a few meters away from the spot.

An eyewitness, who is also the complainant in the case, told DNA on condition of anonymity: “I heard the women screaming for help and with my friends’ help rushed them to Bhagwati Hospital. I also informed the MHB police about the accident and gave them the car’s registration number.”

They were later shifted to Nanavati Hospital.

“The traced the car and arrested Suboth Mahajan, 38, a resident of Dahisar. We have charged him with rash driving and causing grievous hurt under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Indian Motor Vehicles Act,” said police sub-inspector Ravi Jadhav.

“As per the preliminary report by Bhagwati Hospital, Mahajan was driving under the influence of alcohol. Now, we will book him for drunk driving too,” Jadhav added.

“Mahajan’s blood sample has been taken and we are awaiting the report to know the exact content of the alcohol in his blood.”
