Do you live around Kharghar sectors 12 or 13? Have you ever seen a yellow Karizma bike with a licence plate MH.06.AK 8545 zooming past you in that locality? Better still, do you know the owner of this bike? If not, you should keep your eyes peeled and be on alert if you spot this bike in your vicinity. For the bike’s owner certainly deserves to be caught and punished for the utter inhumanity he displayed last week.

According to eye witnesses, the rider was recently spotted over-speeding on his bike with his pillion rider dragging a puppy tied to a rope, making the pup run after the bike for 4-5km to allegedly punish him for pooping in front of their house.

“About 28 years old, both the men were dragging the puppy in a crowded sector-12 market at about 6pm. When my brother Harendra confronted them they were absolutely unapologetic for their behaviour. They threatened my brother saying they were dons of Kharghar and told him, without any shame, that they will drag the dog again,” said an eye witness, Reji.

Instead of arguing, the locals, took the puppy to the nearby New Hope Animal Hospital for treatment. “The puppy was bleeding and his skin was completely sloughed, exposing his elbow joints and nerve endings. We gave him antibiotics, drips and pain killers. He was so scared that he didn’t even drink milk for a long time,” said Dr Shivaji H Talekar. The puppy was eventually adopted by the Kharghar animal welfare organisation.

Sachin Banglera, PETA, said that if the men are traced and a police complaint is lodged against them, they can be punished under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. “However under the provisions of the act they may not get the kind of punishment one thinks they deserve. There is a need for the people’s consciousness to evolve,” he concluded.
