With illegal opium farming tarnishing the image of state, the statistics of the city police show that drug peddling cases have been on the rise in the past three years.

According to the police records, in 2010, the number of cases was 79 involving 131 peddlers. However, 2011 saw 80 cases and the arrests of 97 suspects with recovery of drugs valued at over Rs58 lakh.

According to the police, narcotics like marijuana and brown sugar are the most commonly abused substances. “However, there is less demand for high-end drugs like cocaine, heroin and opium as they are costly and are made available only on specific demand,” a senior police officer told DNA.

The police investigations have also revealed that narcotics are being smuggled into Pune in huge quantities from states, including Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Kashmir.

An inspector attached to the city crime branch told DNA, “The most popular narcotic substance amongst junkies is ganja and charas. Most of the drug abusers are men with students engaging in ganja and cocaine.”

Anti-narcotic cell senior inspector Satish Deore said, “Strong police action has curtailed the open sale of drugs. Yet, peddlers are managing to bring drugs from Mumbai, Goa and other cities into the city. Ganja is mainly coming from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Cocaine is a costliest drug as it is imported from abroad.”
