Drug menace: Narcotics Control Bureau tightens screw

Country’s apex drug law enforcement agency Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will very soon have a separate intelligence wing and a unit in the naxalite infested Chattisgarh state. This development comes after several cases of drugs being transited through the state which has dense forests and heavy naxalite movement came to light in the past few months.

Recently a huge contraband of marijuana was seized from a village located in border area of the state which was allegedly being brought from Orissa for supply in some other states. Chattisgarh has a border with six other states of which the border areas Naxalite infested.

There have been several seizures made by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and the Anti Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai police wherein it was found that large contrbands of marijuana was being brought from states and specifically areas which are Naxalite infested.

Last year, a contraband of 1,200 kg of marijuana was seized by ANC which was brought from the Warangal district of Andhra Pradesh, the truck used to bring the contraband was from Chattisgarh and natives of the state were involved in bringing the drug to the city.

At present Chattisgrah falls under the Indore unit of NCB headquartered in Madhya Pradesh, setting up a new intelligence wing in the state will further help take stricter actions against drug traffickers operating from these areas and using these areas as route to ensure that the contraband reached states like Maharashtra.

A senior NCB officer said, “The process of setting up an intelligence wing in the state of Chattisgarh has been approved by the union minstry of home affairs and it will be completed soon. The wing will function independently in the state and report to the director general, NCB. This will help keep an eye on movements of drug traffickers.”

He added “There have been reports that in many naxal-infested areas across the red corridor, where poppy is illegally cultivated. Then it reaches cities like Mumbai.”
