Though Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi kept party tradition alive in the drought-hit Satara district, the opposition has slammed him, stating that his show was a flop because Rahul only spent two and a half hours there. Rahul has promised more funds from the centre to offer respite to drought-prone areas.

The Gandhi scion landed in Jhashi of Satara district, nearly 250km from Mumbai, in a helicopter from Mumbai at around 8.45am on Saturday. He visited Jhashi Talao, which is one of the major water resources of the district. He was then taken to a grapeyard in Bijawadi village, which had dried due to the drought.

This was followed by a visit to Bangari village, where he visited a fodder depot and reviewed the implementation of the government-sponsored employment guarantee scheme. He had various questions related to the fodder depot such as how it runs, and whether the stock could cope with the food scarcity or not.

Rahul then held a meeting with the villagers in a school, where he gave a hearing to their grievances and complaints. One of the villagers pointed out angrily that the government should ensure enough drinking water, everything else should be a lesser priority. Some of them also said that the lift water irrigation project was the solution on the scarcity of the water. Rahul assured the villagers that with the help of the central government, the state government will undertake the required measures.

Rahul was seen discussing and directing chief minister Prithviraj Chavan regarding the measures he wanted the state government to take up. Rahul also assured the villagers of sufficient central funds. “The central government allocates funds under the Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Programme scheme. We will ensure that the adequate funds are released for the drought-hit areas in Maharashtra,” he said. Rahul was accompanied by CM Chavan, state unit head of the party Manikrao Thakre, youth congress president Vishwajeet Kadam and a couple of other ministers. CM Chavan had visited the drought hit areas three weeks ago as well.

The leader of opposition in the state council, Vinod Tawde, who has been touring the area for the last few days, said that Rahul did not seem to have enough time to spare for people in distress.
