Mumbai: First it was the reduction in quantity, as well as the duration of water supply. Now, there is a drop in water pressure. The crisis gets more acute with every passing day.
The imposition of a 15% cut in supply has meant that over 400 million of litres of water have been deducted from the usual daily supply to Mumbai. The decrease in supply has led to water level plummeting at the master balancing reservoir (MBR) at Yewai, from where water is pumped to various parts of the city.
A senior hydraulic department engineer said that the fall in level had affected water pressure. "The water level at the MBR usually stands at 4 metre. It has now dropped to 2 metre." He added that supply had fallen drastically in parts of south and central Mumbai, which received water directly from the MBR. The worst-hit areas were between Dadar and Byculla. Many households in these areas, particularly those on the upper floors, complained that there had been no supply for the past few days.
The BMC hydraulic department officials are undecided about the way to tackle the situation. "It is crucial to maintain the water level at the MBR. We cannot let it drop further," the official said. Ways to maintain the level at 2 metre are being weighed, but it will take some time to reach a consensus and implement the corrective measure.
