It took the Goregaon police two days to solve the mystery behind the dead body of a 25-year-old man found in a parked tempo in Motilal Nagar on Tuesday night. The man died after a bike and tempo hit him at Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) on Monday.

According to the police, the deceased, Golu Gawai, worked as a cleaner in a private company and lived in the Chandivli area in Sakinaka. On Monday, at around 5pm, Gawai was walking along JVLR in Powai when a speeding bike hit him. Gawai fell to the ground and was struck by a tempo heading in the same direction.

"A traffic constable on duty rushed to the spot and confiscated the tempo driver and biker's licences. The constable also directed the tempo driver to admit Gawai to a nearby hospital for treatment," said police inspector Raju Kasbe of Goregaon police station.

"However, Gawai died on the way. Scared, the tempo driver parked his tempo in Motilal Nagar in Goregaon and fled."

"On searching the body, we found a piece of paper in Gawai's pocket with a mobile number which belonged to his friend Tambi who gave us details about Gawai," said Kasbe and added, "On being contacted, the tempo owner Lalji Yadav told us that his driver Sushil Pandey called him on Tuesday night and claimed he was assaulted by some people who stole the tempo. Pandey then switched off his phone."

While the biker has been arrested, the tempo driver is still untraceable.
