The city reported the first dengue death of this season with Nerul resident Jayashree Ghadi, 45, succumbing to the disease at Jaslok hospital on Wednesday night.

“She was conscious when brought to Jaslok hospital on Wednesday, but her platelet count was as low as 11,000 (normally it is between 1.5 lakh and 2 lakh),” said Dr S Mohanty, medical director of Jaslok hospital. “We diagnosed her with haemorrhagic dengue fever. She died at 9pm.”

Ghadi, a homemaker who lived in Nerul's Prathamesh Society in sector 16A, had complained of high fever last week. “We rushed her to a private facility in Nerul. As her health did not improve, we took her to BARC Hospital on June 11. But her condition still did not improve, so, we moved her to Jaslok, where she died,” said a relative of the deceased, who did not want to be named.

Dr Babasaheb Rajale, deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management), did not confirm the exact cause of death.

“We are yet to receive a copy of the death certificate from Jaslok hospital. On receiving the same, we will have to check the history of the patient to confirm the cause of death.”

He added that the civic body will carry out intense fumigation in the area where Ghadi lived.

“As a precaution, we will conduct fogging and spraying in the area and ask residents to get their blood tested,” Dr Rajale said. “Since January, we have found four suspected cases of dengue, but no case of death has been registered,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Opposition has taken the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation to task for not taking adequate measures to improve public health.

“The corporation has an annual budget of nearly Rs2,000 crore, but most of the money is spent on infrastructure, while public health is ignored. If the civic body does not take immediate action, we will teach its officials a lesson,” warned Vijay Mane, Shiv Sena's Nerul unit chief.
