The city was left stunned on Tuesday evening when a group of Young Officers from the College of Military Engineering (CME) allegedly thrashed up traffic policemen posted at Tilak Chowk near Alka Theatre. They also chased them and ransacked the Sambhaji Bridge police chowki.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone I), Dnyaneshwar Phadtare, told DNA, “It all began after two youths from CME at Dapodi rode on the Sambhaji Bridge defying the no-entry curb on two-wheelers. Two traffic police personnel, one of them a woman constable, intercepted them Alka Theatre chowk.”

Tension mounted as reports of the incident that took place around 8.30pm spread like wildfire across the city and hordes of onlookers thronged the spot. The Young Officers later tried to flee from the spot, but were accosted and restrained by policemen with the help of onlookers.

A few defence officers rushed to the spot and held discussions with senior police officials. A few heated moments were witnessed as scores of youngsters claiming to be young officers cordoned off the entire chowk. This resulted in scuffles and some mediapersons reporting the incident were manhandled.

“When the traffic policemen asked them for their names and demanded to see their licenses, the two youths denied to comply saying they belonged to the army and were not subject to any penal action,” Phadtare said.

“A heated argument ensued. One of the youths called up some friends and a few moments later, several cadets reached there in four trucks,” Phadtare added. “The cadets assaulted the police personnel taking the law in their hands. They even manhandled the mediapersons and abused a woman reporter,” he further said.

Two separate cases have been registered against them. One for manhandling traffic police personnel, and the other for robbing video cassette of the shoot made by a mediaperson.
