In the first three months of 2011, the Pune traffic police fined more than 1,500 two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets. These riders had violated traffic rules — such as jumping signals and rash driving, among others.

The traffic police imposed an additional fine of Rs100 on each traffic violator for not wearing a helmet. In November last year, the traffic police had decided that it would impose additional penalty on two-wheeler traffic violators for not wearing protective headgear.

The measure was taken to inculcate the habit of wearing helmets among two-wheeler riders. “Our initiative is yielding positive results gradually. Awareness among the two-wheeler riders is increasing about the imperative need to wear helmets,” said deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Manoj Patil.

According to traffic police, once these erring drivers are caught they are educated on the need to wear helmets. “Lives of many accident victims can be saved if they wear helmets. People have to understand the need to protect the head while riding two-wheelers,” said police officials.

According to Patil, with the new admissions in colleges in the offing, those parents planning to buy two-wheelers for their children must ensure that their wards wear helmets on the roads.

“We have observed that students entering colleges buy trendy two-wheelers. They ride these vehicles rashly without wearing helmets. It could prove fatal,” said the deputy commissioner of police.

A few years ago, the city police made attempts to make wearing of helmets compulsory for two-wheeler riders. But they did not succeed, as there was vehement opposition from riders.
