Under pressure due to the increasing crowd at ward offices, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has appealed to citizens not to rush to get the Unique Identification Number (UID) as the enrolment would continue till March 31, 2012. It said the deadline would be extended if necessary.
According to the press statement issued by the civic body, at present, the enrolment of citizens for UID is being done in 14 ward offices of the PMC. There have been many instances of citizens crowding at these centres and arguing with the staff. It is leading to difficulty in enrolment of citizens.
The enrolment of all citizens would be done under UID so that they get a 12 digit unique number. If the enrolment is not completed by March 31 or if the administration finds it necessary, then an extension may be given to the project. Hence, citizens should not rush to these centres.
It said the enrolment of citizens is being undertaken in the state. Hence, it is difficult to procure additional machines for the purpose in the city.
It said it has noticed that many rumours are being spread amongst citizens about getting the UID number that one would get free food grain or free homes thanks to the UID but there is no relation of such schemes with the UID.
It said the project is being implemented in Pune as per the memorandum of understanding between Unique Identity Authority of India and the state government.
