A leopard from the neighbouring Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) has been straying into the residential areas of Yogi Hills in Mulund almost every day since last fortnight. Though the wild cat has not attacked any human till date, it  has killed many dogs in the area.

“The leopard can be seen sitting on the boundary wall of the SGNP every evening and in the wee hours, waiting for the dogs to come within reach. The animal has killed many dogs in the area during the fortnight,” said Mithilesh Yadav, a watchman deployed at the under-construction receiving station of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) at Yogi Hills, Mulund.

The big cat is making rounds of the area in search of easy food—dogs—which are ample in the area. Yadav claims to have seen a leopard on the wall in the wee hours on Tuesday as well. On Sunday, the animal killed a dog in the view of Yadav and two other watchmen.

“Though the leopard has not attacked any human till now, the increased incidents of straying are definitely a cause of worry,” says Ramesh Agrawal, a resident of Yogi Hill, who saw the animal while his bungalow being constructed a few years ago.

The field director and conservator of forest, SGNP, Dr PN Munde said, “Since the area is virtually on the boundary of the national park, straying of wildlife can not be ruled out. We should respect the wildlife.” However, he assured to look into the matter.
