A group of city doctors successfully removed a 10-kg tumour from the abdomen of a 55-year-old Omani national Lamiya. The surgery took five hours as the tumour was huge.

Lamiya, who was brought to Jehangir Hospital in the first week of June, was diagnosed with a huge tumour in the abdomen that was causing her severe pain for the last few years.

Chief of oncology department at Jehangir, Dr CB Koppiker said given the size of the tumour, we had to make a large incision running the entire length of her abdomen for proper exposure.

The tumour was a 30 cm x 20 cm large solid mass with fluid within. There were high chances of the tumour being cancerous and the team of doctors had to proceed with great caution while removing the tumour and separating it from other vital organs, avoiding injury to them.

“Fortunately, the tumour turned out to be benign. Nevertheless, it could have led to life threatening complications in case it was left untreated. A large bucket was required to carry the tumour,” said Koppiker.

The team included Dr Koppiker, Dr Upendra Dhar, Dr Asma and Dr Sandhya Sathe, anaesthetist.
