For students, who have creative skills and want to make this talent a career possibility, an animation course is the best choice. 2-D and 3-D animation are emerging form of media which have a broad range of applications from children books to animated movies, mobile games to cartoons programs.

Educational CDs/DVDs, animated toys, advertising and computer gaming also need animators in large numbers.

The Indian entertainment and media industry is worth Rs29 billion annually and is growing at a rate of 22% per year. The Indian gaming industry is estimated at Rs28.5 billion and growing at 68% per year. This accounts for less than 2% of the worldwide market which is set to increase and will offer even greater opportunities.

An animation programme involves various steps including story, character sketch, concept creation, environment, character and mechanical animation, voice recording and digital editing. So, one can work as a modeler, layout artist, clean-up artist, scanner operator and so on. Every role is crucial for the successful creation of the animated project.

Qualifications and skills
For a diploma or a bachelor course, one needs to have passed 12th standard. A few institutes offer courses after SSC also. For postgraduate program one should have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline preferably arts. A creative mind and basic knowledge of computers is a must. Besides that, one should be good at visualisations, choice of colours and have flair for sketching/drawing/storytelling.

Some institutes like Industrial Design Centre (IDC), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and National Institute of Design (NID) have strict eligibility criteria where only graduates of architecture, technology and engineering, fine arts can apply.

Zee Institute of Creative Arts, JJ School of Arts, FX School, Arena Multimedia, Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics,  Academy of Creative Arts and many other institutes in the city offer degree and diploma courses. Some Institutes offer good placement facilities also.

How much you can earn:
Animation is an ever growing field across the globe. Besides big animation companies like Sony, there are plenty of production houses in Mumbai also which require animators. You can start working as junior animator and your salary could be anywhere between Rs1.5 lakh-Rs2 lakh a year. At the middle-level, the amount could reach up to Rs6 lakh with hard work, knowledge and experience. At a higher level, one can draw  between Rs10  lakh and Rs18 lakh per annum.
