The month-long DNA Eco-Ganesha drive finally came to an end on Wednesday night. Amidst dance and music, around 20 societies who made a conscious decision of going green this Ganesh festival were awarded trophy and green memento by DNA. This is the second year that DNA has awarded people for making a green choice.

The award ceremony that was held at the Hilton Hotel, Andheri, saw society members from across the city. They were first entertained by singer Shibani Kashyap before being presented awards by actress Amrita Rao and Dr Mukesh Batra. Sponsored by Vicco Vajradanti Go Natural paste, the initiative is powered by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and Green Yatra. It is also supported by LG, Rajdhani, Bajaj MINIZ, and TATA Docomo.

“Since most people in our mandal are youngsters, the award has given us a boost. An appreciation by someone always helps. DNA is a brand and people are encouraged as they have been acknowledged,” said Sandeep Jain, co-worker of the Shree Niwas Mitra Mandal in Mulund. The mandal has opted foran eco-Ganesha after 25 years.

“Of the 800 societies audited, we shortlisted only 25 not just for eco-friendly decorations but also the idols. These societies will not just get trophies but also over 200 paper bags will be handed out for distribution. The other initiative was to go from one mall to eight with large clay idols,” said Gautam Dalal, DNA’s marketing head.

Actress Amrita Rao added, “I am proud to be associated with this award. Since my childhood, I used to wait for Ganesh’s festival but dreaded the day of immersion to see what happens to the idols. DNA has taken a good initiative of reaching out to the people and promoting the eco-drive.”

Dr Mukesh Batra, who gave away the awards complimented DNA for the initiative and said, “I am glad that this paper is not just giving good news to readers but also making sure that people take good initiatives towards eco-friendly environment.”
