A 53-year-old constable, who was dismissed from service in 1993, has threatened to end his life if he is not reinstated in the force. He claimed that he was dismissed from service on improper grounds. He has also written an application to the governor requesting him to allow him to kill himself.

Mohan Malhar Rajguru, who joined the police force in 1981, has been running from pillar to post in order to get reinstated, but claims that the police hierarchy is not paying heed to his plight, which has forced him to end his life. Rajguru was dismissed from the service in April 2001 by the then deputy commissioner of police, Zone IV, D Kanakratnam.

“I was posted at the Mahim police station as a naik. I was on sick leave for nearly six months and did not report to the office. But before I could give any explanation, I was told that I have been removed from the service. Proper norms were not followed in my dismissal as the powers to dismiss a police constable lies with the commissioner of police and not his subordinates,” said Rajguru.

Rajguru, a resident of Pune, is now staying at his sister’s place in Byculla. He is worried for the career and future of his three children, including a daughter.

“I have no house to provide shelter to my family and have been jobless for the past 10 years. I am deprived of other government benefits like pension and housing. I am unable to take care of the education and financial needs of my family and hence I have decided to take this step,” Rajguru said. He has written to senior police officers, including the Director General of Police, requesting them to reinstate him in the service. “I have also written to the governor stating that my request to end my life should be forwarded to the President of India,” he said.
