A 47-year old diamond broker was allegedly beaten by four persons on Monday near Opera House, claiming to be police officers. They then allegedly looted cash and diamonds worth over Rs18 lakh from the victim. The police are however verifying the claims made by the victim.

According to the DB Marg police, complainant Mansukh Seledia, a diamond broker and resident of Shakti Nagar, Dahisar (E), was walking near Opera House when the incident occurred. Seledia told the police that, at around 7.20pm, four persons approached Seledia and told him that they are CID officers and had information that Seledia was involved in illegal activities.

He further told the police that, the ‘cops’ took him to an isolated place in the nearby area and on the pretext of searching him, forcibly took out a pouch containing diamonds and cash Rs1.80 lakh. When Seledia protested, the quartet allegedly assaulted him with knives on both his hands before fleeing.

“He told that passerby saw him lying injured and admitted him at nearby Saifi Hospital. The hospital authorities then informed the police about the case,” said senior police inspector, NR Mali, of DB Marg police station.

The police are also ruling out the possibility of someone insider  likely to have tipped off robbers about Seledia.
