Rohit Thangappan Joseph alias Satish Kalya (pictured), 35, has the reputation of a ruthless operative in the crime world. The sharpshooter of the Chhota Rajan gang, who has three murder cases and one attempt to murder case against him in Mumbai, is known not to falter when he shoots his targets. However, he said, after he fired five rounds at J Dey in Hiranandani, Powai, on June 11, his victim’s stare left him numb.

Kalya, who was riding pillion, said he turned back after firing at Dey to check if the bullets had hit him. “I hoped to see Dey on the ground. But he was sitting on his bike with feet firmly planted on the ground,” Kalya’s police statement read. “He was wearing a helmet, but I could see his eyes. The way he looked at me, it sent shivers down my spine. Dey gave me a deathly look which left me numb for a moment.”

He added: “For a moment, I thought all the bullets had missed him.” Scared that Dey might have survived, Kalya wanted to take a U-turn and fire again. “But when I gave a second look, Dey had collapsed to the ground,” Kalya said. “Even though everything happened in a few seconds, the look in Dey’s eyes will haunt me forever.”
