Police constable Dattatrey Rathod has three daughters — he craved for a son. But that did not happen the natural way. And he knew that he could not beg or borrow a son. So, he decided to steal one.

Around 3am on Monday, Rathod, a constable with the Amboli police station, kidnapped a boy who was sleeping with his family on a footpath in Borivli (East).

But he was caught in two days after a team from the Kasturba Marg police station started hunting for the culprit following a complaint filed by Ashok Gadekar, father of the kidnapped boy, Ashish.

Gadekar, a daily wage labourer, and his family resided at Maruti Chawl, Borivli (East). That night, he, wife Sunita, their son, Ashish, 3, and nine-month-old daughter Priyanka were sleeping on the footpath outside their shanty.

Along came Rathod, with his friend, Santosh Parab, a flower vendor. Seeing the boy sleeping on the footpath with his family, the idea of kidnapping him came to Rathod’s mind.

But before he could make his move, a police patrol came down that way. Noticing Rathod and Parab standing on the footpath, and a family sleeping nearby, the on-duty cops grew suspicious. They asked the duo what they were doing there at that hour. Rathod told them that he was waiting for a friend and showed them his police identity card. Satisfied, the patrol went away.

Rathod did not waste any more time. He picked up Ashish and, along with Parab, fled the spot before the boy could raise an alarm. Gadekar woke up around 5am, and found his son missing. He spent some time looking around for him in the vicinity, before filing a missing person’s complaint with the police.

“When we began investigating the case, we soon came to know that a police constable and his friend had been seen by a patrol squad at the spot where the Gadekar family was sleeping on the night the kidnapping took place,” inspector Rajendra Thakur of Kasturba Marg police station said.

“We inquired at the Amboli police station about Rathod. Then we kept watch near his residence at the Mahakali Police Line, Andheri (East). We found Ashish in his home on Wednesday afternoon.”

Rathod was arrested. He admitted that he stole the boy as he craved for a son. He also told the police about Parab, and he was nabbed from his residence in Goregaon (West).
