‘Design innovation key for manufacturing sector’

National seminar organised by CII focuses on new product development.

Confederation of Indian Industry — Avantha Centre for Competitiveness for SMEs had organised a two-day national seminar and exhibition recently in the city on ‘new product development’ last week. 

The seminar focussed firstly on developing an understanding of product development and application of latest software tools and their impact on the way of working in the research and
development, electronics and engineering functions. 

General manager of State Bank of India (SBI), Riten Ghose, said in his keynote address said strong industrial growth of more than 8% is possible in India and mentioned the financial schemes offered by SBI, useful for the funding opportunities for entrepreneurs.  

“Competitiveness is the challenge of the industry which plays an important role in creating future markets and demand,’ he said. 

Director of Research and Development Establishment (Engg), DRDO, Pune, Guruprasad  said focus on various elements of engineering design is needed as per customer requirements. “Quality of design is the quality of product. Design innovation is the most important parameter in manufacturing sector,” he said highlighting the success stories of research and development projects of Indian defence. 

Plant head of Tata Motors R Bhaskar said emerging technologies in global product development is an opportunity for Indian industry.

“Product development and engineering simulation technologies in practice today have created some worked in cold testing of automotive engines. Engineers should find opportunities and work on utilisation of technologies which impact larger technology innovation needs,” he said. 

Head CII-Avantha Centre for Competitiveness for SMEs Harinder Jeet Singh, while delivering the concluding remarks, pointed out that better quality and better productivity are important challenges for the industry. 

About 110 participants from leading companies participated in the programme. Leading companies like DRDO Labs, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Siemens, Minda Group, Tata Auto Comp, Ministry of Railways and L&T participated among others. 

Over 20 reputed speakers presented the best practices o with focus on breakthrough in technology tools. New product introduction steps, metal casting and prototyping methodologies applied in product development and innovations were amongst other relevant topics discussed in the seminar. 

The CII-Avantha Centre for Competitiveness for SMEs was established in 2004 with the aim of creating competitive and visionary for SMEs.
