The civic body is planning to put railings on the parapet wall at the Gateway of India’s promenade.

Vinod Shekhar, the Congress corporator from Colaba, demanded that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) install the railing on the parapet to provide more safety to the visitors.

“In last one year, hundreds of people have been rescued by the locals, police and other authorities, but some have lost their lives too,” said Shekhar.

“During the holidays people come from all over the country to see the heritage site. They are unaware of the dangers of the sea. So the railings are a must at the site,” Shekhar said.

Vinod Sawant, senior inspector of the Colaba Police station also supported Shekhar’s demand. “In every incident of drowning the local police are first respondents. We have to attend the call and have to wait for the fire brigade as we are not equipped to deal with it,” he said.

As the Gate way of India site is a prime heritage area, the BMC has forwarded letter to the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC) to consider Shekhar’s demand.
