The Andheri-Ghatkopar metro will be delayed further. Forget train operations, the MMRDA which said the line would be up and running by next year, is yet to clear land and hand over to the Mumbai metro engineers a portion of the plot which occupies a religious structure.

“A few structures of the mosque near Andheri station are coming in the way and holding up the steel bridge structure that is being pushed over the Western railway at Andheri station,” a site engineer told DNA.

“The MMRDA, which is required to hand over 100% right of way to us is yet to get the required permissions from the mosque authorities for demolishing the said structure. This has led to another delay and for two months, work of the steel bridge is seeing slow progress,” he said.

The engineer said the parapet wall and a small portion of a minaret is creating problems in the construction of the steel bridge which has already been delayed by over two years due to various problems of approvals, etc. The new delay will further advance the completion date of the long-awaited metro rail.

As per the concessionaire agreement, the MMRDA is in-charge of clearing all bottlenecks or problematic issues causing delays in the construction of the metro rail work. It has to ensure that the work of the prestigious project is completed at the earliest.

The first corridor of the Mumbai metro passes through the most crowded and busiest roads of Andheri and Ghatkopar. Only after the bridge is laid, the complete pathway would be ready. After this, tracks and overhead wire structures would be laid on them followed by tests and trials of trains. Passengers services will start later.

Dilip Kawathkar, MMRDA’s joint project director, said if there are any issues of permissions to be acquired, they shall work out a solution.
