The opposition rocked the state assembly on Monday over the delay in tabling the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) despite the announcement by the government. Members from the opposition benches also raised the cabinet’s right to summon the Auditor General (AG) before sending the report to the Governor.

Peace prevailed only after deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar assured the house that the report would be tabled either late in the evening on Monday or early afternoon on Tuesday. He said that the government could not keep its promise as Governor K Sankar-narayanan was travelling the last few days and this had led to a delay in tabling the report. Pawar added that the approval of the governor was expected by Monday evening and that could help the government in tabling the report by late evening. He said the government was of the opinion that the report should be tabled in time.

Ganpatrao Deshmukh, Peasant and Workers Party member, questioned the provision under which the state cabinet summoned the AG to discuss the CAG report. “Article 151 of the Constitution clearly states that the Governor should table the CAG report through its government after it is submitted to him by the AG. The question here is why the government discussed it before the AG,” he said. He also demanded that the speaker issue directives for the time period to table the report after it was submitted by the AG.
