Over a thousand Indian and foreign delegates will attend an International Conference on Advances in Yoga Research, Education and Therapy at Lonavala on Thursday.

At least 240 research papers will be presented in the conference organised by Kaivalyadhama Institute from December 28 to 31. The conference found ample support from the state government, with Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh donating Rs 5 lakh for the initiative. The Maharashtra State Higher Education Department also issued a circular stating that all teachers/prinicipals, who wish to attend the conference, will be considered “on duty”.

“We have invited vice-chancellors of universities across the country, as they are the ones who have the freedom to introduce new ideas in curriculum,” said Subodh Tiwari, organising secretary of the conference.

Rajan Welukar, Vice-Chancellor Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University (YCMOU), Nasik, Kumud Bansal, former education secretary and Member of Parliament Suresh Prabhu will speak at the conference. “With dignitaries like these, the government will seriously consider the recommendations,” added Tiwari.

YCMOU, Nagpur University, has already incorporated yoga in their curriculum. Even the Mumbai University has a yoga department.

Besides, 200 foreign delegates from countries like Japan, Brazil and the  UK will also attend the conference. “Earlier, yoga was looked upon very sceptically by the medical fraternity. But now, their outlook has changed,” said Tiwari, adding that All-India Institute of Medical Sciences even has a Holistic Health Department.

Papers will be presented on obesity, brain functioning and diabetes. “Two interesting papers will be presented by Satbir Khalsa from Harvard University, on his seven-year research on yoga and insomnia and Gautam Dave from Rajkot on yoga and reversal of heart disease,” said Tiwari.
