The recent spate of attacks against women in the city and nation has prompted authorities of Vikas Vidyalaya for the Hearing Handicapped, Dadar (West), to give self-defence tips to their girl students and sensitise them about the current situation.

The school organised a special discussion on Thursday where students were told to read the newspaper every day and discuss such issues in class.

Akshata Chavan, a class 8 student, said, “Last month, a starnger touched my hand at Dadar station. I stared at him angrily and he ran away. Our teacher had given us various self-defence tips on how to handle such situations.”

Vikas Vidyalaya for the hearing handicapped was started 44 years ago and has always given tips to girl students on how to protect themselves.

“We always discuss current issues in our class. After the incident in Delhi we discussed various ideas on how we can protect our students. We also gave them tips on how to handle such situations. We have advised them to keep safety pins with them which can be used against molesters,” said Sunanda Aagashe, co-ordinator of  the school.

The school authorities also try to keep a tab on the emotional well-being of their students. If any student seems disturbed, she is taken to another room to understand what is bothering her.

“We have one teacher for every 10 students and we give special attention to each student. Whenever such incidents occur, we tell girls about the precautionary steps that they can take. Boys have also been told to take care of the girls when they are outside the school premises,” said Yashodhara Waghmare, vice-principal of the school.
