Nazim Sheikh, 34, and Farooq Shakoor, 45, of the Sayyed Ali Mira Datar dargah at Sewri were caught red-handed by Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths on Saturday morning for allegedly offering a bribe of Rs10,000 to police inspector Anil Sardal.

The duo wanted Sardal to register a fake case of theft against the four members of their dargah at Sewri. P.I. Sardal said, “Sheikh and Shakoor have been working as supervisors overseeing the maintenance of the dargah for the past several years. Their contract expired in 2010, yet they are still working”.

In August 2011, Sheikh lodged a complaint of theft at Sewri police station against four members — Hanif Nalkhande, 60, the late Mohammed Iqbal Chunawala, Parvez Ansari, 50, and Anwar — of the dargah trust. He alleged that they had stolen the scrap goods belonging to the dargah.

During preliminary investigations, it was revealed that both the parties were quarrelling over the dargah’s maintenance. In this context, the case was pending in the High Court.

Sheikh additionally filed a complaint at the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court at Dadar. During the investigation of the case, it was revealed that  the trust members were sold the scrap materials after getting consent of all members. After selling it, they had deposited the money in the trust’s bank account, revealing that the theft case filed by the Sheikh was false, said Sardal.

Sheikh then approached the investigating officer, Sardal, several times and offered him bribe of Rs10,000. Accordingly, ACB officers laid a trap outside the Sewri police station on Saturday.
