The bhoomipujan of the new facility was held on Sunday.
The 4.75-acre facility, scheduled to be fully operational by 2011-end, will provide design, testing and analytical support to each of Dana’s primary markets — automotive and commercial vehicle.
Vice president (global engineering) Andy Nieman said the centre would help provide full in-region engineering, testing and analysis capability for local markets.
“The centre will house engineering design activities and a test laboratory to support light vehicle driveline, commercial vehicle and power technology product requirements.
“The centre will include performance, structural, environmental, oil flow and lubrication, metallurgical testing as well as noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) testing capabilities,” he said.
Managing director (Dana India), BD Singh, said the
centre will also provide an essential complement to their existing engineering resources at technical centres strategically located across four continents.
“With as many as 550 engineers on site when fully operational, the new technical centre would be more than double Dana’s engineering presence in India,” he said.
In February, Spicer India Ltd., a Dana majority-owned venture
with Anand Automotive Systems, announced the launching of hypoid gear manufacturing facility in Chakan. The new gear facility is expected to begin production in the first half of 2011.
The two new facilities will bring the number of Dana operations in India to 12. Dana and its affiliates employ approximately 2,000 people in India.
According to the company, it expects sales of more than $200 million in the country in 2010.
