Going by the spate of student suicides in the city, the civic body on Wednesday spelt out a plan to tackle the issue in the `E’ budget for education this year.
The focus will be on the overall development of the child by involving parents. Municipal commissioner Swadhin Kshatriya quoted philosopher David Thoreau in his budget statement saying, “To understand a child is to understand the world.”
The growing expectations of parents put a lot of stress on students. “This has led to lack of confidence and depression among children,” Kshatriya said. “In the field of education, it is important to understand the child as well as to make efforts for his/her overall development.”
Psychiatric workshops and seminars will be organised for teachers, deputy head teachers, and head teachers to counsel students in municipal schools.
Dr Sanjay Oak, dean ofKEM Hospital, will be the guiding force behind theprogramme.Parent-teacher meetings will be organised to make parents aware of their children’s academic progress. A budgetary provision of Rs5 lakh for primary schools and Rs1.80 lakh for secondary schools has been kept.
