For almost 90 minutes he writhed in pain, crushed under a 15-tonne cement mixer truck. Yet Dilip Jadhav is alive. He is recovering at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Nanavati Hospital.

The miracle followed a mishap which happened at 2pm at Andheri on Sunday. The police said that Jadhav was driving his employers — the Bhanushalis — home in their Totyota Innova. Headed for Goregaon, the car halted at the Gold Spot Junction on the Western Express Highway, next to a cement mixer truck.

As the signal turned green, the vehicles started moving. The mammoth cement mixer truck, trying to take a turn, skidded and toppled on the Innova. Witnesses were shocked into disbelief, and before any of them could recover, the truck driver and his helper fled the spot.

The fire brigade and the police were informed. “Jadhav’s right shoulder and torso were crushed under the upturned truck. It took almost 90 minutes to bring him out of the wrecked Innova. It is a miracle that he survived the mishap,” assistant inspector Prabhakar Lagvankar, Andheri police station, said.

Jadhav was rushed to Nanavati hospital. “His condition is stable,” Lagvankar said. The other occupants of the car —Karsan Bhanushali, Sambhu Bhanushali, Raju Bhanushali, Premji Bhanushali and Liladhar Mange — escaped with minor injuries.

The cement mixer truck was filled with stones and cement.

Everything came cascading down, when it toppled and crushed the Innova. “We were so stunned that none of us saw the driver and his helper fleeing the spot,” Deepak Yadav, a witness, said.

A case was registered against the truck driver and his helper at the Andheri police station. The police launched a manhunt for the duo.

“We will ask the RTO for details of the owner of the truck. From him we will get details of the driver and the helper, and nab the two,” a police officer said.

The cops recorded statements of witnesses to get clues about the absconding duo. A hunt was on when reports last came in.
