The next time you find yourself walking on the stretch of road between Diamond Gardens and Chembur Naka, call on all your deities before you decide to cross over to the other side. With a large number of vehicles, including heavy ones, whizzing past every other second, pedestrians complain that it takes them 10-15minutes to get across the road near the Vijay Vihar Housing Society.

“Crossing the road here is unsafe. Given the continuous flow of vehicles, locals find it hard to cross the road. Signals have been installed at places where they are not required,” alleges SR Iyengar, a resident of the housing society.

Adding that pedestrians find it tougher during peak hours, residents demand that a traffic signal be put up at the crossing near the housing society.

Iyengar claims that the traffic police tried to pass the buck when he approached them. “I approached the Suman Nagar traffic police post seeking redress. But I was asked to gotto the department’s head office in Worli, where I was told to approach the local chowki. Such is the approach,” he fumes.

Another resident says since the distance between the two traffic signals at Diamond Gardens and the naka is short, the traffic police may not be too keen on setting up a traffic signal at crossing there. But, he wants the authorities to make alternative arrangements for locals’ safety. “Nothing better that installing a traffic signal near the society. But if the police find that infeasible, then they should find another solution,” he says.

The traffic police, though, appear to be in the dark about the residents’ grouse. They, however, add that they are ready to move a proposal on setting up a traffic signal in case such a demand is made to them. “We will install signals wherever it is required. So, if anyone approaches us with such a demand, we will definitely look into it,” assures Balkrushna Garule, senior PI (traffic), Chembur. He said installing a traffic signal between two others on a short stretch of road is feasible.
