Noise from firecrackers is not just harmful for the eardrums, as nine-year-old Chembur resident Abhishek Jadhav found out.
On Friday evening, Abhishek was running away from noisy crackers that his friends were firing when he fell on an iron fence. A rod pierced his right arm.

Showing presence of mind, his parents, instead of trying to pull the rod out of his arm, cut off as much of the rod as possible with a metal cutter, and then took him to a hospital. Doctors at Joy hospital successfully removed the piece of rod and saved his hand.

Kautik Jadhav, Abhishek’s father, said, “We are thankful to the doctors for their quick intervention. If there had been any delay, my son would have lost his hand.”

Kautik, who works with a government company, added, “The government should take cognisance of incidents like these as they happen every year. It should ban noisy crackers because they are a health hazard. We can’t stop children from firing crackers, but if the government bans the manufacture of such crackers, it will help.”

His family said he was playing with friends when a few of them fired loud crackers. Abhishek ran away and he fell on the metal fence. Neighbours called his parents, who got a metal cutter from a nearby shop after realising that the injury could worsen if they tried to pull the rod out.

Doctors at Joy hospital said that the surgery was complex, and they were relieved that they could save Abhishek’s life. “The patient was lucky that there was no severe damage to any major blood vessel or nerve. After removing the rod, we realised it had narrowly missed the nerves and blood vessels. We took help from plastic surgeon Dr Sitaram Prasad. Abhishek will be discharged today,” said Dr Himanshu Bendre, orthopaedic surgeon.
“He is out of trauma and is talking to relatives. We have done a detailed investigation. He will be all right in 15 days.”
