The state transport (ST) driver Santosh Mane case took a dramatic turn on Monday when the court of judicial magistrate first class Umeshchandra More issued a show cause notice to investigation officer for providing false information regarding the medical status of the killer driver. The notice mentions that the explanation is sought through the commissioner of police.

According to the notice, Mane on January 26 was remanded in police custody till February 3, but on January 28 the investigating officer came up with an application that they need to observe and evaluate the suspect in a closed indoor psychiatric set-up like the regional mental hospital.

Subsequently, the court sent Mane to the mental hospital for observation till February 1, and extended the period till
February 6.

However, the investigating officer filed a medical certificate dated January 25 given by psychiatric Dr Manjiri Kota. But the application submitted on January 28 did not carry the medical report dated January 27.

However, the court stated in its Monday order that the medical report reveals that during the observation period between January 28 and February 6, the serial mental status examination conducted by a panel of psychiatrists revealed that the suspect was diagnosed with major psychiatric illness, a fact not mentioned in the earlier police report.

The investigating officer and assistant commissioner of police Rajendra Mohite had requested the court for Mane’s magisterial custody for test identification parade and had told the court that the investigation is mostly complete and no police custody was required.

Mane, the driver of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), went berserk on the Pune roads on January 25 after hijacking a ST bus and snuffed out the lives of eight people and left 30 injured on Wednesday.
