A metropolitan magistrate’s court at Esplanade on Friday said the Azad Maidan police station should investigate the alleged theft of the bulletproof jacket worn by martyred ATS chief Hemant Karkare on the night on November 26, 2008.
Santosh Daundkar, an activist, had filed the complaint on the basis of the information he sought under the Right to Information Act. The complaint states that Karkare’s bulletproof jacket was not seized by the police after the autopsy and it was allegedly stolen from the JJ Hospital where he was taken after being shot by terrorists near the Cama and Albless Hospital.
Daundkar’s complaint states that in the inquest panchnama of the items seized from Karkare’s body, the police have not mentioned the bullet-proof jacket.
The court also observed that in a letter dated November 30, 2008, the Azad Maidan police have stated that according to the officers who took Karkare to JJ Hospital, the ATS chief was wearing the jacket that was removed before his medical examination.
Daundkar has stated that the bulletproof vest may have gone missing from the hospital. The court observed that the statement of the police team that carried Karkare’s body may have been hearsay.
