The Vile Parle police have registered a case against at least three unknown people for allegedly snatching a parcel of gold ornaments worth over Rs2 crore from a courier boy at gunpoint on Thursday morning. No arrests have been made so far.

According to the police, the incident happened near Kunkuwadi area in Vile Parle when Sanjay Saini, the courier boy, was on his way to his office after collecting the parcel from domestic airport.

The courier contained valuables and gold ornaments worth around Rs2 crore, the investigation revealed.

Saini, in his statement to the police, said that he was travelling in an autorickshaw when two men who were standing by the roadside got in forcibly. The autorickshaw was moving slowly at that time because of the narrow lanes and the traffic in the area, he added. The accused pushed Saini and snatched the parcel after threatening him at gunpoint.

The accused then got down and fled on a motor bike, which the third accused rode. Saini chased the accused but to no avail. A police complaint was then lodged at Vile Parle police station against the unknown accused. “Further investigation is on in the case,” said deputy commissioner of police Satyanarayan Chaudharie.

The initial investigation revealed that Saini and one of his colleagues, identified as Dilip Vyas, had gone to the domestic airport to collect the parcels for their employer. Saini decided to leave for the office with the parcel after completing the clearing procedure, while Vyas had to wait to complete some formalities.

Police sources said it was difficult to completely believe Saini’s statement, as the spot where the alleged incident took place is considered to be a busy area and it would not have been easy for the accused to flee. “We are probing from all possible angles,” said a senior official involved with the investigation.

Interestingly, Saini said the autorickshaw’s registration number was MH-02-VA-2754. The police apprehended an autorickshaw bearing the number and detained its driver in Juhu. However, he was not the one who had been driving the autorickshaw at the time of the incident. This has led the police to suspect that the missing driver was party to the crime and had used a fake number plate.

The police will record the statements of the others in the area to get a clearer picture of the appearance of the accused as well as to know the route they used to escape. They will go through the footage of the CCTV cameras installed near the airport and along the Western Express Highway to ascertain the movements of Saini and the accused and also to reconstruct the crime.
