Union home minister P Chidambaram said on Thursday that the Improvised Explosives Devices (IED) Management Institute, governed by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), will give an added advantage to paramilitary forces and the state police force deployed in the red corridor in countering left wing extremism.

Chidambaram was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the IED Management Institute at the CRPF Group Centre Campus in Talegaon on Thursday.

“The lack of capacity to counter IED exposed our anti-terrorism system between 2001 and 2008 at various places in the country. But with the help of advanced knowledge imparted by the institute, our paramilitary forces will have an upper hand while fighting terrorism and extremism,” he said.

We have ample human resources to fight terrorism and trained professionals to combat the red menace, but continued and sustained training can enhance our capacity building, as 80% of the paramilitary personnel died due to land mines and IEDs, he said.

Meanwhile, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, who was also present on the occasion said, “This institute and training will help the state police force in combating Maoist extremism in the red corridor of the state.” The institute will train total six batches comprising 100 cadets from various paramilitary forces and the state police above the rank of police inspector. Initially, total 12 faculties will train the participants and in return these trained staff will have to impart handling, detecting, and neutralising of IEDs to their colleagues.

The institute will provide a wide spectrum of specialised and technical training that includes all aspects of IED management, search, detection and disposal.
