After numerous squabbles and backbiting, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Congress seem to have kissed and made up with both parties agreeing to fight the upcoming Vidhan Parishad (legislative council) elections together.

The NCP also announced that it has called off the farmers’ rally to be held in Delhi on May 16, against the UPA’s anti-farmer policy after its demands had been met.

In Maharashtra, the Congress and NCP have agreed to split the 10 seats that go to the polls equally.

The legislative council elections are due for six local body seats, two from the graduates’ constituency, and two teachers’ constituency.

In the local body constituencies, the Congress will contest from Latur, Amravati, and Chandrapur, while the NCP will field candidates from Raigad, Nashik and Parbhani.

While the NCP and Congress are exchanging Chandrapur and Parbhani, the NCP is handing over Latur, where it has a slight majority, and is thus, in a position to claim that seat on the principle that the larger party will put up a candidate.

“We have agreed to let the Congress contest from Latur as a goodwill gesture,” said Madhukar Pichhad, NCP Maharashtra president.

Congress state chief Manikrao Thakre said he was confident that NCP councillors and supporters would back his party candidates.
Asked about the fights and bad blood over the recent civic body elections, he said those were local issues. “At the local level, we may have gone our separate ways, but we remain united at the state and central levels. This is a state-level election and we expect all support from our partner,” he said.

The Congress will contest the Mumbai graduates’ constituency and the Mumbai teachers’ constituency, while the NCP will contest the Konkan graduates’ constituency and the Nashik division teachers’ constituency.
