Acting on a report which establishes many irregularities in the Parshvanath College of Engineering (Thane), the Mumbai University has decided to take action against the college.

“Action will be initiated soon against the college. The university will write to the government and recommend appointment of an administrator at the college,” said a university official.

The report, accepted by the university’s management council on Tuesday, highlights several irregularities that include non-payment of salary to staff on time and non-payment of arrears.

“Students are being charged very high fees and donations. They are fined for trivial issues. While their fees are Rs43,000, students are charged Rs60,000, thought the receipt shows Rs43,000.
Again, crores of rupees taken as fees was not getting reflected in the college’s account indicating that money was being siphoned off,” said a member of the committee which investigated wrongdoings at the college.

The report says that the college lacks basic infrastructure, there is no proper ventilation and even the toilets are in a bad condition.
Another aspect revealed by the report is sexual harassment by the college vice-principal who allegedly speaks in a vulgar language with the college faculty and students and even shows them pornographic pictures. It recommends immediate action and termination of officials concerned.

Meanwhile, the annual convocation of the university, which did not take place on its scheduled date of December 19, is expected to be held by March-end. “The management council members were assured by the vice-chancellor that the convocation will now be held either on March 22 or 29th depending on chancellor’s availability,” said a council member.
