Cocking a snook in the nose of Pune rural police, a gang of six goons headed by Mahesh alias Bunty Prakash Pawar went on a shooting spree in Tukainagar near Ambegaon Budruk late on Thursday night.

The gang first shot at the house of a rival of Bunty terrorising the local residents and later, when the policemen reached there, they opened fire even at the police team. Thankfully, nobody was injured in the shootout.

The policemen nabbed four alleged members of the gang after carrying out a search operation in the hilly areas near Tukainagar. However, Pawar managed to  escape with two others.

The arrested people include, Shubham Baban Waghmare (19) of Tukainagar, Damodhar Dhutwale (20) of Hingne Khurd and Pramod alias Gotya Tirthe (21) of Vadgaon Budruk. A case of attempted murder was filed at Haveli police station after constable Ashok Nandkumar Taru lodged his formal FIR.

According to the police, Pawar had a long-standing rivalry with Tukainagar resident, Parag Rajendra Buwad. Pawar and his associates allegedly went to Buwad’s house looking for him late on Thursday night but could not locate him.

Furious, they shot two bullets on the door of Buwad’s house. Panicked, the residents of the area shut themselves in their houses as the gang created a ruckus abusing Buwad’s family and issuing threats of dire consequences. Meanwhile, someone had tipped off the policemen at Abhiruchi police chowki.

A team of constables — V R Pradhan, R V Chandanshive and Ashok Taru — rushed to the spot on a tip off. However, when Pawar spotted the policemen arriving, he fired a bullet towards them.

Pradhan somehow managed to duck the bullet. Then, Damodar opened fire at Taru and he too succeeded in ducking it. Taking advantage of the chaos and darkness, the gang fled and took resort in trees.

When the three policemen alerted their counterparts at the Pune rural police control room, the police swung into the action and a massive force was rushed to the spot.

The policemen combed the entire hill and the surrounding areas till 5 pm.

However, none of the senior police officers had gone to the spot. At that time, assistant police inspector, N S Kavthale, of Haveli police station was on duty.

When asked as to why not a single officer rushed to spot after receiving a tip-off about the firing at Buwad’s house, deputy superintendent of police, MP Karade of Pune rural police, said,

“Our policemen had received a tip-off that there was tension in the Tukainagar area. After reaching the spot, they alerted us about the firing. Within 10 minutes, Kavthale reached the spot with extra manpower.”

Karade further said that rising cases of attack on policemen is becoming a casue of concern. He said, “The attacks on policemen is a serious issue and incidents are increasing day by day. After arresting Pawar, we would take stringent action against them.”
