Cops arrest extortionist with loaded revolver

The VP Road police on Tuesday succeeded in nabbing notorious extortionist Laxman Krishna Karan alias Bhavjya, belonging to the Pandav Putra gang who has been demanding ransom from hoteliers, estate agent, shopkeepers, traders and hawkers at Girgaum for one month, and also recovered a country-made revolver and five live cartridges.

“Bhavjya has been active in the crime world for eight years. There are eight serious offences, including a murder, attempt to murder, extortion, robbery and burglary registered against him at VP Road and DB Marg police stations. He was booked under the MCOCA by the Mumbai police in 2009,” said Vilas Joshi, an inspector. He added that the arrested was remanded in police custody till February 19 by the local court.

The incident took place on February 4 at around 4.30pm. Bhavjya went to a bar in Girgaum and threatened the manager with a revolver before demanding Rs20,000 per month. The manager tried to nab him but Bhavjya managed to escape.

The manager then lodged a complaint. During investigation, Joshi on Monday received information that Bhavjya had arrived near Gol Deval area at Girgaum. The police rushed there and nabbed him.
