The police again got a rap from the Bombay high court on Tuesday for failing to take action on a businessman’s complaint and for unnecessary interference by senior IPS officers.
A division bench of justice VM Kanade and justice PD Kode has directed the state government to file an affidavit in four weeks in reply to the petition.

The petition has alleged interference by IPS officers - Amitabh Gupta, special inspector general of police (training and special forces) and Bipin Kumar Singh, joint commissioner of police, Thane/special IGP.

A petition filed by Rajeev Sharma, whose family owns a beauty store in Santa Cruz, said they had invested around Rs9 crore in a fixed deposit with Dhanlaxmi Co-operative Credit Society and Loyal Co-operative Credit Society between 2002 and 2008. From 2008, the societies started defaulting on payment of the fixed deposit and interest and started dilly dallying on the release of deposits, alleges the petition. On June 9, 2011, Sharma’s store was ransacked at the behest of the co-operative credit societies, the petition said. The Sharmas managed to catch two-three persons who were handed over to police.

Subodh Desai, advocate for Sharma, argued that initially the police did not lodge the complaint. They gave a written complaint to the additional commissioner of police and also to deputy commissioner of police, zone 9. “However, the police din’t make any arrest due to alleged interference of Amitabh Gupta and Bipin Kumar),” alleged Desai.
