While requesting the India Against Corruption (IAC) volunteers as well as Mumbaikars to go for that public transport to avoid traffic jams, the police have made it clear that there will be “minimal or no road diversions” en route to the MMRDA ground, where Anna Hazare is beginning his three-day hunger strike today.

According to the police, they have requested BEST to ply extra buses during the protest days, so that more people can use the public transport. “Around 200 traffic police personnel will be deployed at the Bandra- Kurla Complex stretch during the protest and decisions on any diversions will depend on the ground situation. However, we do not rule out traffic snarls on Western Express Highway as the protests are taking place on a working day,” said Brijesh Singh, additional commissioner of police (traffic).

In fact, the traffic police along with the IAC volunteers have asked people to use skywalks to avoid traffic jams. “We have estimated that 50,000 people will come to the protest venue, and traffic personnel will be deployed accordingly,” added Singh.

Meanwhile, the state home department has warned that the action will be taken against provocative speeches made during the protest.

In a meeting with top police officers on Monday to take stock of the security preparations on the eve of the 3-day protest by social activist Anna Hazare, additional chief secretary (Home) UC Sarangi said, “The city police have been closely monitoring the situation and there is no need of additional force from outside.

The department will monitor the speeches and found provocative, action will be taken.”

Sarangi said access control mechanism will be in place. “Though the police will have no control over the persons sharing the dais with Hazare, they will certainly ensure the cars are allowed only to the parking lot capacity. The  speakers will also be allowed till 10 pm at the venue,” he said, after the meeting at Mantralaya.
