Police stations and police chowkies across the state will soon have reception desks!

Director general of police Ajit Parasnis announced in Pune on Monday that the reception desks would guide people visiting police stations and chowkis to get their work done.

The proposal has been sent to the home department for its approval.

Parasnis was addressing members of the women vigilance committees during the inaugural function of the two-day workshop at the Centre for Police Research (CPR), Pune.

About 50 representatives from different districts of the state are attending the workshop. The members of the committees act as counsellors to settle disputes like domestic violence cases.

“The reception desk would enable people to know which officer to meet at the police station so that they can get their work done quickly. This move would certainly improve the police-people interaction,” said the DGP, adding that the nitty gritty of this scheme is being worked out.

Commenting on women vigilance committees Parasnis suggested that these panels and the police should work together to create awareness among citizens to curb crimes related to women, like molestation and sexual harassment.

“Cases of human trafficking and child molestation are increasing at an alarming rate. These panels can play a decisive role along with the police to create awareness among the masses to curb such crimes,” he suggested.

The state police chief also advised the panel members to create awareness about female foeticide.

Pune commissioner of police Meeran Chadha Borwankar said that the women vigilance committees in the state have done a good job as far as domestic violence against woman is concerned.

“At least 71% women have been benefited by the committee. But changes are needed in the constitution of the committees to curb human trafficking cases. There should be regular training and guidance,” she said.

Vidya Bal, social activist and editor of ‘Milun Saryajani’, said, “Though the women vigilance committees are doing exceptional work, the monthly meetings are not regularly held. This needs to change. Many people still think twice before going to police stations. They should approach the committees which are attached to police stations and put forth their issues.”
