A senior inspector of the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) was penalised for not following a Bombay high court directive recently. The division bench of justice BH Marlapalle and justice RY Ganoo asked him to cough up Rs5,000 for failing to file an affidavit despite court orders.
The EOW had repeatedly failed to file reply affidavit in a petition filed by Bhagyashree Lele, 42, after the agency failed to file a chargesheet in a cheating case in 2000, noted the judges.
Bhagyashree had filed a complaint with the EOW in 2000 against her brother-in-law for allegedly cheating her of Rs67 lakh. But, nine years later, the agency is yet to file a chargesheet against the accused. Bhagyashree had moved the high court early this year.
On November 19, the court granted two weeks time to the EOW to file an affidavit, but the wing failed to follow the court’s directions.
