Mumbai: In a rare case of reverse corruption trap, a senior police inspector of MRA police station with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) trapped two persons who were trying to bribe him. The accused, identified as Sunil Goenka, 45, and Shashi Goenka, 50, were arrested on Wednesday while offering bribe to senior police inspector Sunil Kokil.
According to the police, a case of cheating and forgery was filed against Sunil and his wife Sheela at the MRA police station by the complainant and his brother-in-law Mukesh Bansilal Zaveri. "Sunil and his wife were accused of making a fake will and taking jewellery worth crores from the locker of Bank of India at Fort by forging the signature of their father Bansilal when he was in the ICU," said Sunil Kokil.
The case was filed when Kokil was not posted at MRA police station as senior police inspector. "In this case, I found that the couple was on the wrong side. The accused came to know about our investigation and were sacred of being arrested," said Kokil.
"On June 23, Sunil first offered me Rs2.5lakh to close the matter," said Kokil. Sunil then approached the officer on June 28 with his elder brother Shashi and offered Rs5 lakh. They then approached me with Rs5 lakh for ignoring the case and Rs5 lakh to lodge a complaint against the Mukesh."
Finally on Wednesday, Kokil went to lodge a complaint against the duo at ACB office. On Wednesday, Kokil got a call from Shashi who asked to fix the meeting at Karma Bar at Kennedy Bridge near Opera House at 8pm.
The trap was laid to arrest the duo, "I met the duo to witness the whole incident to catch them red-handed at the bar. They ordered food and drink after which they handed over the bag containing Rs5 lakh. They were nabbed the same moment," said Kokil.
